2026/2027 School Age Groups Changes

Beginning with 2026–27 tryouts, teams will start being organized using a school-year (grade-based) age grouping system. Under this format, the eligibility window for each age group will run from August 1 through July 31 of the following year. A chart below outlines the updated age brackets along with the birthdate ranges that correspond to each seasonal year.

This change is being introduced by U.S. Soccer Federation as part of a nationwide policy shift, meaning it is not something created by our club or league alone. Moving away from the current calendar-year structure will understandably raise questions for families and players. We recognize that adjusting to a different age-group system can feel uncertain, so the information below is intended to explain how the transition will work and what to expect.

Below you will find the 2026–27 school-year age group chart, which lists the applicable birthdate ranges.

FAQ

Is it possible for my player to move up to an older team?

  • Yes. Players may be considered for a team above their designated age group. Placement at that level is based on performance during tryouts and how the player compares with others competing for those spots.

Our coaches aim to place players in an environment that best fits their development. Decisions are guided by factors such as technical ability, understanding of the game, and overall readiness. The objective is to challenge players appropriately while supporting steady growth and confidence.

What impact will this have on my child’s current team?

  • Teams will now be organized according to the August 1–July 31 school-year cutoff. Because of this adjustment, some changes to existing rosters are likely as teams are reorganized under the new structure.

When will the official school age season start?

  • New school age teams will start competitive play late-August/September 2026.

Will every club have to follow this format?

  • Yes. All clubs participating in the leagues will be required to use the same school-year age group guidelines.

Will players know which team they are likely to join before tryouts?

  • Coaches will try to provide general guidance and expectations to players ahead of the 2026–27 tryouts when possible. However, final roster decisions will only be confirmed after evaluations during tryouts are complete.

What is the reason for the change?

The move to school-year groupings is intended to accomplish several goals:

  • Align team placement more closely with the school calendar, reducing situations where players are caught between middle school and high school seasons under the previous cutoff.

  • Allow more players to play with classmates, which can strengthen friendships and team chemistry.

  • Provide greater continuity when building teams within the club.

  • Maintain a competitive setting focused on long-term player development.

  • Keep local leagues consistent with the national direction of youth soccer in the United States.
